OpenAI Boss Calls GPT-4 "Dumbest" Model

News: GPT-4, the latest brainchild of AI research company OpenAI, might seem impressive. But according to OpenAI's co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, it's not all that smart. In fact, it's the "dumbest" model we'll ever use.

Altman made this surprising statement during a Q&A session at Stanford University. His comments hint at a future filled with far more capable AI models.

Why downplay GPT-4?  Altman believes rapid progress is being made in AI development.  Each new version will be a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor.

Think of GPT-4 as a stepping stone. It paves the way for even more intelligent AI assistants like GPT-5 and GPT-6.

This focus on rapid iteration is a core principle at OpenAI. They believe in releasing new models frequently, even if they aren't perfect. This allows them to gather feedback and improve future versions faster.

Compared to what we had before it. It's amazing. Obviously it's not what will exist long term. But it's infinitely better than using Google for most things and Google is how most people get into it.

Sam Altman isn't worried about the financial cost of developing increasingly complex AI models. He sees the potential benefits as outweighing the expense.

Of course, there are concerns about the potential dangers of superintelligent AI. But Altman seems confident that OpenAI is developing AI responsibly.

I believe GPT 4 is paid and so it has limited training data, and so it takes time. On the other hand, GPT 3 is free and hence requires a ton of context + content + training data to come up with generated text.

The company is committed to ensuring that AI is used for good. They believe open collaboration is key to achieving this goal.

So, while GPT-4 might not be the smartest AI around, it's a sign of exciting progress to come. The future of AI seems bright, and OpenAI is at the forefront of this revolution.
